May is the celebration of many things: Memorial Day, flowers in bloom, our mothers, and most surprisingly, Clean Air! Supported by the American Lung Association, the month of May is Clean Air Month, a month dedicated to educating the public about why clean air is vital to not just the health of our planet, but our individual health, too.

This is a month to take action and do our part to make sure we leave the air a little cleaner than when we found it. According to a report conducted by the American Lung association, 4 out of 10 people on the planet live in a space where the air is toxic to their health. The 2018 report stated that “more than 7.7 million people (2.4 percent) live in 10 countries with unhealthful levels of all three: ozone and short-term and year-round particle pollution.”

Clean air is a big deal. So, what can you do this month to make sure that we are minimizing our contribution to polluted air?

Take a Walk, Ride a Bike – While there are many instances where using your car is the only mode of transportation, small excursions like to the store, or local library could benefit us by walking or riding a bike, reducing pollutants in the air. And as an added benefit, they’ll boost your physical health, too.

Change Your Home’s Furnace Filter – Pollen, dust, and other junk can end up in your vents and ducts in your home. Changing that filter will stop them from ending up in the air when it’s full.

Change the Cabin Air Filter in Your Car – If changing the filter in your home makes sense, maintaining the cabin air filter in your vehicle is just as important. A clean filter protects 50 million Americans that have allergies to airborne particles by trapping them inside, instead of out in the open. A clean cabin air filter also helps keep the interior of your vehicle clean and fresh and purifies the air in your passenger compartment by filtering pollen, dust and other contaminants out.
